Sierra Trio

Three heroes from the golden age of Sierra adventure games, printed and painted by hand

Completed2026

They say everything was better back in the day. Back in the day we had an 8088 XT, and Alley Cat was one of the very first games I ever played. But then came the era when adventure games were the thing, and it all started with King’s Quest. After that came Space Quest, Police Quest, Quest for Glory and Larry, each one just as unique and fun.

CH 01 Idea

Looking for something special

After painting all the He-Man figures, it felt like a waste not to do anything with all my painting supplies. And I didn’t want to paint a standard D&D figure that didn’t really mean anything to me. No, I wanted something special. So I went looking for anything Sierra.

I stumbled upon a 3D model with zero downloads. The preview looked really cool though, so I bought it. Turned out it was partly made with AI.

Fixing the model

Because of the AI part, I had to fix the 3D model in quite a lot of places before it was printable. But it paid off: the resin print came out really well.

Three-way zenithal

I wanted to take things a step further with this model and decided on a multi-layer zenithal prime. Since Roger in the middle wears light clothes, I had to spray him separately from Graham and Sonny.

CH 04 Paint

The real painting

Then came the real paint job. I started with the clothing and had to get a lot of different paints for all the different textures. There was some really fine detail involved too. The eyes were very hard: I had to do them by dotting, with a toothpick. I’ve since gained more experience with tiny 5/0 brushes, but this was still before that time.

With the three figures done, I started on the bases. Each one needed its own look and feel. The three metal rims — silver, gold and bronze — are a nice touch too.

CH 05 Finish

Varnish and a bit of grass

The finishing touch was the varnish. I used three kinds, each with a different level of gloss, to bring out the textures even more. And as the very last finishing touch, I added grass to Graham’s base.

A unique piece of art

All in all, another really fun project where I learned a lot. And once again, a unique piece of art.
